This month, we were thrilled to participate in the second StudentConnect tour, generously hosted by the Southern Seawater Desalination Plant in Binningup.

The experience was both eye-opening and inspiring, offering VET and Workplace Learning Coordinators a wealth of insights to share with students about the diverse and often unexpected career pathways available in the water industry. From highly specialized roles to hands-on technical trades, the tour showcased a fascinating array of professions, including:

Commercial Divers
Electricians trained in Germany for advanced equipment testing (only two in Australia!)
Dual-trade Electrical/Instrumentation Technicians
Mechanical Technicians
Plant Operators
IT Specialists
Finance and Accounts Professionals
Environmental Engineers
Crane Operators
Scaffolders
Laboratory Technicians
Drone Pilots

In addition to exploring the technical side of operations, attendees had the opportunity to hear directly from the Maintenance Manager, Environmental and Finance teams. They shared valuable insights into the soft skills that are increasingly sought after in the industry—such as adaptability, dedication, and problem-solving—and offered a forward-looking perspective on how artificial intelligence is shaping the future of work in this sector.

From the spotless facility and impressive water production processes to the camaraderie of staff pedalling between workstations on trikes, the visit was a powerful reminder of the innovation and teamwork driving this essential operation.
