“Starting work experience at Perkins Builders gave me the opportunity to explore an industry completely outside of my comfort zone. Before beginning my placement, I knew very little about the construction industry and project management, but saying yes to the opportunity allowed me to learn so much. What started as simply trying something new quickly became an experience that taught me far more than expected.
Working alongside Project Manager Anna has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. She has been incredibly supportive and welcoming, trusting me with real responsibilities and encouraging me to get involved in current projects and on-site experiences. Being treated as part of the team has helped me gain confidence, develop new skills and feel more encouraged to put myself out there and embrace new opportunities.
Throughout my placement, I have had the opportunity to work on a range of currently developing projects and gain insight into the behind the scenes processes involved in construction and project management. I have studied architectural drawings and floor plans, revised quantity and cost sheets, compared project quotes using Excel, categorised equipment for supplier quotes and checked trade comparisons for different projects. I have also communicated with contractors through professional emails and sat in on meetings, which has given me valuable insight into workplace communication. Visiting a variety of different worksites has helped me better understand how the administrative work of projects coordinate with what happens on site.
Working with such a trusted and well respected WA builder has given me valuable industry exposure and experience that will benefit me in future employment opportunities. Throughout this placement, I have developed skills that are transferable across many industries and career pathways such as communication, organisation and teamwork. I have also built professional connections and gained insight into the importance of networking within the construction and business industry.
This experience has taught me that trying new things is one of the best ways to discover what you truly enjoy and what opportunities are available. Even if you are unsure about your future, being open to new experiences can lead you in the right direction. This placement not only introduced me to a completely new industry but also gave me the confidence to take chances on opportunities I may never have considered before.”
